Networking and Nostalgia at Newark Academy: In-College Day

By Tyler Goff ’14, Staff Writer
On Tuesday, January 4th, Newark Academy hosted an “In-College Day” for alumni still attending college. Over forty alumni arrived to come and see all of their old friends and teachers. The reception portion of the event was held in the Eberstadt Room, as opposed to the Great Hall where it had been held in previous years. The alumni were also given two separate presentations to offer them specific advice about how to plan parts of their lives in the near future.

Caroline Ackerman ’10 came to the event to “catch up with teachers and to attend the networking programs,” and she found the two presentations to be very informative and helpful.  Bill Kaplan ’69, CEO of Working Knowledge presented “What is networking?” while Yair Riemer ’01, General Manager of the Students Division at Internships.com led the aptly named “How to get that Internship.”

When asked if NA had taught her anything for college, Ackerman answered that Newark Academy “taught me to try new things and venture outside of my comfort zone, which I find really important in college when choosing a new class or extracurricular activity.”

Some alumni, like John Sternlicht ’08 spent the day before the event to see old friends and teachers and then went to the program the next day. John mentions how coming to NA “was how I imagine it will be to watch my favorite childhood Disney movies with my future kids. I saw the school in a very different way, without the innocence

and naivety I had when I was a high school student just three years ago, but the magic was still there.”  Looking back at his years at the school, Sternlicht expresses some regret at not participating in the performing arts. He feels that “NA students are lucky to be a part of a community that is so supportive. It was foolish of me to waste the opportunity to exercise creativity.”

Both Sternlicht and Ackerman share the similar belief that the programs offered were very helpful. John adds that after speaking with Bill Kaplan ’69, the presenter of “What is networking?” he felt “that the alumni speakers still felt a very passionate connection to the school. It was nice to know that the memories I cherish will always be close to heart.”

Incidentally, Newark Academy also hosted its extremely popular Networking Night on January 6th. According to the Director of Alumni Relations, Ms. McGaughan, a sizeable group of the college-age alumni that attended the in-school event also travelled to the larger Networking Night held at the Penn Club in New York City. Clearly, the early weeks of January were filled with a whole host of events for the young alumni looking for advice and, of course, good times with former classmates.
