Club Update: Stock Market Club

Michael Kaplan

By Zach Epstein ’14, Staff Writer

One of the great things about the way clubs work at Newark Academy is the variety that is offered to the entire student body. Anyone is allowed to join any club, but if a student wants to join a club that does not exist yet, they possess the power to create that club. That is just what Michael Kaplan ‘13 did this year when he started the Newark Academy Stock Market Club.

The Stock Market Club started out strong, with a large throng of followers excited to participate from the get-go. As president Michael Kaplan says, “It is a great way for novice investors to acquaint themselves with the financial world.” Members of the club range from complete inexperience to slightly more background knowledge. This creates a welcoming atmosphere for all club members, where it is truly a great learning experience for everyone.

President Kaplan also harped on how supportive the faculty was when he attempted to get the program up and running. The faculty helped him through the process and made sure he had all the necessary tools to ensure he and his club could succeed. Students and faculty agree that this club is a great idea because it is a fantastic outlet for students to invest their time. It has the potential to be a great constructive hobby outside of traditional academics, while still being a very fruitful and enjoyable way for students to spend some free time.

Mr. Bitler—the club faculty advisor—has extensive experience and knowledge in the field of economics. His presence at club meetings ensures that all information discussed will be of the utmost credibility. Mr. Bitler also helps everyone fully comprehend all topics at every meeting, guaranteeing that all club members will learn and make advances with their investing abilities.

One of the most useful tools of the Stock Market Club is the incorporation of marketwatch.com. This website allows for participants to simulate investment in the stock market using imaginary money. This use of technology will help club members understand the workings of the market while allowing them to make decisions on the allocation of money to different stocks. The use of this website will also allow club members to become more involved with the club, participating as often as their schedule permits. This is very important because the club does not meet every day, but the student now possesses the ability to participate in the club with regularity. This will ensure that students can hone their investing skills in a consistent, efficient manner.

It is clear that this club is off to a booming start and there is no direction it can head but upwards. If you are interested in the Stock Market and are not a member of this club, you should certainly attend the next meeting. Over time, popularity will grow, and student interest will continue to increase. Should the Stock Market Club be a stock itself, it would be great place to invest, with no setbacks appearing in this club’s bright future.
