The New Student Council

By Megha Poddar ’15, Staff Writer

After competitive elections in April, the new student council has formed with both returning and new members. At the head of council for the upcoming year is Nicole Andrzejewski, who can only be described by her peers and teachers as potentially one of the most experienced and devoted presidents the school has ever seen.

Representatives from each grade, who are committed to making the coming school year enjoyable for all, join Nicole. She describes the new council as being a “great combination of fun, hard working, and creative people.” Many of the younger council members are bringing new energy to the regular meetings, which motivates every member on council to continue to make the Academy an even better environment for students and faculty.

The council has already gathered several times to discuss events to close out this school year and additional events for next year. Ultimately, the council would like to create more fun events to encourage participation from all students and to improve school spirit. Rachel Neiman, a rising 10th grade representative, suggested further involvement of the community in the decision-making process on council. Rising senior class vice-president Matt Cowen brought up his unique idea of integrating social-media into student council and the school community. Furthermore, Matt Berkowitz, vice president of the rising sophomore class, proposed the idea of a possible community service fair that will open up all the options to prospective students and make the process of getting involved much easier for the community. As for the upperclassmen, the council is considering the addition of senior cookouts on Days 3 and 6. Coleman Hughes, president of the rising junior class, has brought up the possibility of “random acts of council kindness” to help make junior year less stressful.

Though the student council has been proposing countless events and ideas to make the next school year amazing for the student body, the members have already worked hard to create a few events to close out the current one. Members have already planned Tie-Dye Day to take place May 23rd around the front circle.

Altogether, Nicole says, “The council is really energetic about this upcoming year!” She and the council are working hard to create new events and bring something fresh to the way council operates.
