Newark Academy Debates: LGBTQ+ Rights and Marriage Equality

By Soven Bery ’15, Feature Editor

Ironically, when debating about topics that may seem way too advanced for the likes of Facebook or Twitter, social media is the  platform of choice for many Newark Academy students. In particular, it is Facebook that houses discussions ranging from politics to sports to sexism and everything in between. It isn’t uncommon on the social media site to see students write paragraphs that seem to belong in an essay for school. Of course, this supposedly paradoxical situation makes sense. Teenagers who attend the Global Academy have an educated perspective on the world and use this site to share their opinion, just like any other kid their age. However that impressive knowledge allows students to talk about big business and the president, instead of Justin Bieber and gossip.

Those Facebook debates are represented in this article.

I was charged with the task of obtaining opinions from students on the topic of LGBTQ+ rights and marriage equality, the topic of this Feature, for the first ever “Newark Academy Debates” on The Minuteman. However, the question of how to present these opinions plagued me. Then suddenly it hit me. In honor of our online newspaper  and love affair with Facebook, I created a fake Facebook conversation.

Please keep in mind while the debate itself is fake, the opinions of the students included are not. All quotes were obtained first hand and were said by the student who “commented”  below.

Without further ado, please enjoy this Newark Academy Facebook Debate!
