For this set, the feature section chose an unusual and mystical topic: the Kaltenbacher Hall. Feel free to explore our buzzfeeds and articles exploring a wide variety of topics, from the architecture and design to an interview with Mr. Kaltencbacher himself!

“We needed a multipurpose space”, said Ms. Grider, the Director of Institutional Advancement. Thus, the Kaltenbacher Hall was created. “It can hold about 120 people, in between the size of an auditorium and a classroom, making it perfect for Board of Trustee meetings, grade meetings, dances, Ted X Talks, and much more,” she continued. After becoming accustomed to the space since its opening in 2012 as a part of the new Upper School Wing, many students agree. “It’s very useful because it creates an intimate setting for smaller lectures and discussions,” said Dalton Destefano ’16. “By facilitating these discussions and breakout sessions, the space is really helping Newark Academy fulfill its goal of becoming a global academy.”
The company hired to design and construct the Kaltenbacher Hall is called NK Architects, a local mid-sized architectural, structural engineering, planning, and interior design firm. The company has worked with several other independent schools in the area, including Delbarton, Kent Place, Morristown Beard, and the Peck School. Collaborating with a team of students, faculty, and administrators, the company met the high expectations for the design of their facilities by constructing our Gold Standard LEED Certified New Wing.

LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. LEED-certified buildings across the globe cost significantly less to operate by reducing energy and water bills. In addition to economic sustainability, they strive to conserve energy, reduce water consumption, improve indoor air quality, make better building material choices, and drive innovation. Newark Academy is the only LEED-certified building in the town of Livingston. Additionally, the Kaltenbacher Hall has environmentally friendly and sustainable features, such as the bamboo floors. “It’s great that the New Wing is so sustainable and environmentally friendly,” said Catherine Celente ’16. “It ensures that future generations of Newark Academy students will be impacted by the benefits of this construction project.”
With countless benefits, both short-term and long-term, the Kaltenbacher Hall is sure to become a staple of the Newark Academy campus in the future. But for now, take a look!
