Planned Parenthood: Defund or Not?

A debate about Planned Parenthood funding cannot be a debate about abortion and the question of its morality. The legality of abortion is clear: it is legal. That does not mean that the federal government should fund Planned Parenthood. Recent tapes allege that the federally-funded private organization Planned Parenthood allowed babies to be born prematurely, took their organs, and “aborted” them while they were not in the womb. Their organs, such as the brain and heart, were removed and sold to biotech companies to profit the organization. Not only is it inhumane and immoral to kill a baby once it is born, but it is also illegal, called infanticide. It doesn’t matter if the fetus was in the womb for twelve weeks or nine months – under federal law it is illegal to put an infant under once it is out of the womb. Although I believe Planned Parenthood should be criminally prosecuted for this, there is not enough evidence at this point to do that. What we can do, however, is defund Planned Parenthood. While the government does have a moral obligation to fund women’s health, it does not have a moral or legal obligation to Planned Parenthood. There are 13,000 women’s health clinics in the United States, other than the approximate 800 belonging to Planned Parenthood. Those organizations did not allegedly commit infanticide or sell fetuses’ organs.

The Democrats’ support of Planned Parenthood is hypocritical because they are very vocal against other similar large organizations and corporations. Planned Parenthood is actively trying to keep its influence in Congress by lobbying Democrats and other lawmakers. There will be a budget bill proposed by the majority Republican congress that does not have funding for Planned Parenthood, but does offer funding for another organization that is less controversial. There is no reason for Obama and other Democrats to reject that bill and have the government shutdown. The question is not if the Republicans should risk shutting down the government because of their disdain for Planned Parenthood over its recent allegation; the question is why are the Democrats so willing to shut down the government because they want funding for Planned Parenthood over other organizations. Planned Parenthood does not need the funding, and many American taxpayers – whose voices should be heard – do not want to give Planned Parenthood the money. Other women’s health organizations are in need and there are very few voters who do not favor helping them. A reason why Planned Parenthood might continue to be funded is because Democrats need their campaign funding from Planned Parenthood, as well as other unions and organizations that have close bonds with Planned Parenthood.

The people who want to fund Planned Parenthood with tell you that Planned Parenthood wants more research done on the human body and is selling these organs for profit. They may tell you that they are not selling these organs, which is false. We need to find out if infanticide was committed and we need to find out  exactly why the organs were sold. The Planned Parenthood supporters may not even care if infanticide was committed because they don’t morally believe that newborns are worth anything yet. This may sound shocking, and you may say, “How dare he make those allegations?” However, there was an article in the left-wing British Telegraph newspaper that quoted Oxford doctors saying that newborns aren’t worth anything. While this view may be rare, it also may be a view that is expressed from Planned Parenthood supporters. Possibly the most common defense of Planned Parenthood will be that they provide abortions and the other organizations don’t. However, this isn’t a fair argument, because we have already established that the morality of abortion is not what’s at stake.

Planned Parenthood has a stranglehold on Congress and now is the time for lawmakers to act. It may lead to a government shutdown, but that would be because both sides could not compromise. Morally and legally, Planned Parenthood is wrong. The time has come for our country to enforce some laws, and the first step toward that is through defunding Planned Parenthood.

Here’s the thing: you say that this view “may” be expressed by Planned Parenthood supporters. Here are some views actually expressed by Planned Parenthood supporters:

1). You ask if Planned Parenthood commits infanticide. They do not, as infanticide is defined as the murder of child within one year of birth, and Planned Parenthood has stated multiple times, instead of just alleging like these videos do. The videos are inflammatory, and designed to provoke. I fail to see any actual sources cited in your article, which I would be interested in reading. An abortion is the removal of a fetus. In the abortive procedures at Planned Parenthood, infanticide is literally impossible. You can read more about the actual process here: https://www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/abortion/in-clinic-abortion-procedures

2).There is also no evidence in the video that Planned Parenthood profits from fetal tissue. Planned Parenthood has said, multiple times, that they do not sell organs, which is true. You might have “selling organs” confused with stem cell research, which is actually incredibly pro-life. Stem cell research helps paralyzed individuals, and is used in research for the cures of many diseases, which saves countless lives every year. Fetal tissue is the reason that we have vaccines for polio, rubella and chicken pox. Here is an excellent article from TIME about the importance of fetal tissue research, which also discusses Planned Parenthood’s role in fetal tissue research: http://time.com/3965176/fetal-tissue-research-planned-parenthood-video/

3). Defunding Planned Parenthood will harm the many women who use Planned Parenthood for cancer screenings, pap smears, birth control, and even care during pregnancy. Abortive procedures are less than 3% of Planned Parenthood’s services. Is it ethical to defund the only access that many women have to life-saving procedures? You mention that Planned Parenthood only makes up 800 clinics, that’s still around 6% of clinics. That’s 800 clinics that serve hundreds of women, and Congress has no plan to help the other women’s clinics.

To conclude: your points are invalid because they are unsupported. Many of them blend both political and ethical dilemmas, and your view seems more focused on attacking something you disagree with rather than focusing on both sides of this complex issue. Bottom line: the moral thing to do is to keep Planned Parenthood open because it provides healthcare, and because all the points you bring up are alleged and unsupported. This is not how you base decisions that will affect many people.

The outside group that produced those videos admitted that they were faked. http://www.cnn.com/2015/10/19/politics/planned-parenthood-videos/

They said a different video was wrong. The one I am citing, which is of planned parenthood employees describing how they sell and harvest the fetal tissue and body parts has been confirmed. The picture I have at the top is from Dr. Mary Gatter suggesting that planned parenthood should charge 75 dollars for each tissue sample.

Spencer, The Telegraph, or “Torygraph”, is the right wing paper of choice in the UK.

Mr Stourton, The torries aren’t that conservative. It would be different if it was called the UKIPgraph

I fail to see the connection between a single opinion in an English newspaper (that is right wing as Mr. Stourton kindly pointed out) and Planned Parenthood supporters. I think that creating a link between the two is a logical fallacy, and frankly unfair. You’re assuming that Planned Parenthood supporters think that way which is baseless conjecture. I’m seeing a lot of hypothetical statements, which I would argue is “strawman-ing” (https://yourlogicalfallacyis.com/strawman) Planned Parenthood supporters, since you are not engaging with what supporters are actually arguing.

As I pointed out to Mr. Stourton it is by no means Right Wing. In America it can be compared to a newspaper supporting a moderate democrats, which by English standards is right wing. If you read the counter article to mine, it was completely about how because abortion is legal we must fund planned parenthood. I dismissed that argument in my first line, so if you think my interpretation of what Planned Parenthood supporters is wrong, then read the article about supporting planned parenthood.

Abortion services are 3% of planned parenthood’s activities. Planned parenthood is more than abortions. It helps both men and women as well.
