Looking for a show that “enjoys the navy” and appeals to “high-society’s whirl”? This year’s winter musical, “On The Town,” features more than thirty talented NA students who have been put up to quite a challenge in working on the production. The show centers around three sailors who have a short 24 hours to experience all of the wonders of New York City before they board ship again the following day. Gabey, played by Ben Leit, sees a poster of a girl on a subway and decides that he must find her. So, the boys split up in attempt to set her up with Gabey. On their adventures, they each fall in love and the six of them sing and dance through the streets of New York.
“On The Town” is famous for its intense dance numbers and classical Broadway songs. When the musical was announced earlier this year, the initial reactions from students were definitely mixed: many were worried about the high-level of dance and song in the show. Sophomore Kianni Keys said that she “didn’t believe we were going to do “On The Town” because it’s hard, but I like that the teachers trusted our skills and talents.” Beyond the “regular musical kids” who participate in the production most every year, director Megan Ferentinos encouraged students in the dance program to get involved as well allowing us to do more intricate and difficult dance pieces. Claire Dempsey ’18 said, “It was a surprise at first that they would pick such a dance heavy show, but so far Megan’s confidence seems to be pushing the cast to work their hardest.” I think Claire’s reaction sums up the current feelings of the cast best.
The entire cast and production team is very optimistic about this year’s show. We look forward to presenting you with the finished product this spring. Who wouldn’t want to see a bunch of girls talking in high-pitched voices ride the subway? Or a bunch of stage kisses in the span of an hour or so? Or Margery and Ben Leit dancing together on stage? So, if you are in the town, come out to watch your friends and classmates in “On The Town”!
