Most teens tell jokes in class, but now they can tell jokes for a class! The Gotham Comedy Club in New York has a stand-up kids’ program called Kids ‘N Comedy. For children from the ages of 10 to 13, there is a class where you learn the basics of stand up comedy. For teens from the ages of 14 to 17, there is a class where you learn more complex joke structure. Both classes meet at different times each Saturday. Every three months, the kids from the two classes participate in two different shows and perform the stand up they wrote. Additionally, there is a pro show that happens every month; the pro show is the tops kids from each class. Over the past two years, I went to the class in the regular show and the pro show, and it was a blast!
We start every class by talking about our week, what happened, and what is going to happen the following week. Then, we go over the stand up we wrote something funny that happened and perform it. After that, we take notes on our bits and write more.
It’s interesting to see younger people’s 4-minute perspectives on life. Most of the kid’s sets revolve around school, friends, and family.
