Netflix “Must Watches” for Summer 2019

By Gianna Porcek ‘20, Arts and Entertainment Editor

Summer is just around the corner and many Newark Academy students, myself included, will be using their summers to de-stress and maybe even catch up on much-needed Netflix time. If this sounds like you, keep reading! In June, new movies, shows, and episodes will be added to Netflix featuring a range of genres, from comedy to scientific fiction. Here are some of Netflix’s most talked-about additions since the start of the new year:

  1. Black Mirror: Season 5

After the success of “Bandersnatch”, the “choose your own path” episode, Black Mirror’s fifth season is coming to Netflix on June 5th. In case you are unfamiliar with the show, Black Mirror is a British futuristic scientific fiction series created by Charlie Brooker that examines the often-overlooked consequences of innovation in modern technology. Black Mirror ultimately shows us the frightening effects of a decline in human interaction and a rise in technological innovation. This isn’t your average sci-fi series. After watching just a few minutes of Black Mirror, the show will most certainly leave you questioning what the future could look like.

2. Grey’s Anatomy: Season 15

If you are a die-hard Grey’s Anatomy fan and haven’t had time to watch the latest season, you’re in luck. Netflix will be adding Season 15 of the beloved TV series on June 15th with 25 new episodes that will keep you hooked until the very end. If you aren’t familiar with the series after 15 seasons, Grey’s Anatomy follows a group of doctors and their work from the time they were interns at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in Seattle to the world-renowned doctors they have become. If you’re looking for a good show that will keep you on the edge of your seat, and even make you shed a tear or two, you should start catching up.

3. Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile

If you find criminal psychology of interest, the shocking story of Ted Bundy is perfect for you. His girlfriend at the time of his killing sprees, Elizabeth Kendall, wrote a book about her experiences with him titled The Phantom Prince: My Life with Ted Bundy  in the 1980s. The film is a screen adaptation of her novel in which she explores her life and experiences with him as his girlfriend. The non-fiction movie was added to Netflix in late January and is ready to watch during your now, hopefully less-busy schedule. With Zac Efron, who plays Ted Bundy, and Lily Collins, who plays Elizabeth Kendall, as the main characters, you are surely going to enjoy watching this thriller.

*The film is Rated R due to the disturbing nature of Ted Bundy’s criminal activity; you must be 17 or older to watch.

4. Spiderman: Into the Spider-verse

In theaters December of last year, Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse will be coming to Netflix on June 26th. It is a must-watch for any Marvel fan. Miles Morales becomes the Spiderman of his reality where he works with five other counterparts in different realities to stop threats in different dimensions. The movie was rated an 8.5/10 on IMDB with cast including Shameik Moore, Nicolas Cage, and Hailee Steinfeld.

5. Murder Mystery

If Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston star in a movie together, you know it’s going to be good. Murder Mystery, a Netflix original, tracks a husband and wife duo as they are on their way to their honeymoon. When on the plane, they meet a very wealthy man named Charles who invites them on their yacht. A man is murdered in the middle of the night and Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston are being framed for his murder. The couple attempts to, very comically, solve the murder so they are not convicted of the crime. The movie will be on Netflix June 14th and it is guaranteed to be an entertaining few hours.

Popular movies and shows that will be leaving Netflix in June include Legally Blonde (movies 1 and 2), Apollo 13, 101 Dalmatians, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2, Pretty in Pink, Terminator Salvation, and Friday the 13th.
