Friendship bracelets with the words, “Karma is the guy on the Chiefs,” and “seemingly ranch.” No one could have even imagined the connection between these spontaneous phrases until Travis Kelce, the tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, displayed his interest in Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour on his podcast “New Heights” with his brother Jason Kelce. It was then that a Love Story which intertwined two apparent dissociated fandoms — football fanatics and Swifties — had begun.

After a few months of internet speculation, the two-time Superbowl Champion Kelce and the pop music phenomena Swift made their relationship public at the Chiefs vs. Bears game. Swift was spotted cheering for the Chiefs in Kelce’s suite. After the game, a video captured the two leaving the stadium together, further confirming the new romance.

The rest was history. Swift was seen again at MetLife Stadium the following week to support the NFL tight end and then appeared at the Chiefs vs. Broncos game with Kelce’s Mom, Donna Kelce. Conversely, at the pop singer’s Buenos Aires stop on her Eras Tour, Kelce was spotted singing along to Swift’s performance, with Swift’s father, Scott Swift. To address the presence of Kelce, Swift changed one of her lyrics on the last song of the concert, “Karma,” from “Karma is the guy on the screen” to “Karma is the guy on the Chiefs.” Throughout the concert, fans also theorized that Swift performed her hit song “End Game” in honor of Kelce, which displayed her excitement about Kelce being there, this time as her boyfriend.

The unprecedented relationship connected entertainment and sports fans in an extraordinary fashion. Kelce’s No. 87 jersey sales increased by more than 400 percent after Swift’s first appearance in Kelce’s suite, showcasing the profound influence of Taylor Swift and the widespread allure she brings to various industries. The NFL’s social media played up the new romance immediately as well, changing its bio to “Chiefs are 2-0 as Swifties” and marketed the Chiefs vs. Bronco game by tweeting “She’s ready for it!” with a video of Swift in Kelce’s suite. The League has attempted to expand its audience and revenue by gaining recognition from Swift’s fandom through the increasing focus on Swift by the NFL’s social media. Swift has shown in the past year of her immense economic impacts — Swift earned $1 billion and boosted the U.S. economy by $4.6 billion solely from the Eras Tour, becoming the highest-grossing music tour ever. After earning a record breaking revenue in concerts, Swift is drastically impacting the NFL as well. At the singer’s first appearance, the Chiefs-Bears game received 25 million views — the most watched game of that week. What’s more, the game also gained 63 percent more viewership from women compared with past Chiefs games.

At Newark Academy, there has also been a rise in NFL viewership amongst students. Lynna King,  a Junior at NA and a long time Swiftie, says, “I wasn’t a big sport or football fan before, but after the news I definitely found myself to be more up to date about the sports news.” With fans wanting to hear more discussions about the relationship, Jason and Travis Kelce’s podcast “New Heights” also soared to No.1 on Apple Music.

Besides gaining recognition for the Chiefs, Taylor Swift appearances to the games have also correlated with better performances from the team. According to the NFL, Kelce is totaling 108.0 yards per game when Swift is present, compared to only 46.5 yards per game without her attendance. Even Head Coach Andy Reid jokes, “Taylor can stay around all she wants.”

Kelce’s friends and family, including his mother, Donna, and Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, have expressed positive views on the new relationship. Donna Kelce told the Wall Street Journal that her son is “happier than she’s seen him in a long time”, and that they’re not overwhelmed by the sudden fame but simply happy for her son. When Mahomes was interviewed by ESPN about Kelce and Swift, he noted that he’s been “lucky enough to meet Taylor and see how good of a person she is,” showing his contentment with his long-time friend’s new relationship.
