Newark Academy after a recent snow day

Snow days are everyone’s favorite type of day. They are an unexpected gift from Mother Nature: the much-needed rest between winter and spring break. Many people have stated that winter and spring break are too close, and the days leading up to spring break feel shorter, with snow days in between. Recently, we had one snow day. But that one snow day left us yearning for more. So often, teachers raise our hopes by saying, “Did you see that there is a hundred percent chance of snow? Maybe 4-8 inches!” Yet in the blink of an eye, the excitement dies as someone adds, “But, guys, I think there is a 20 percent chance we will have a snow day tomorrow.”

Snow days are the most thrilling thing a student can hope for. We long for pre-2020, when we would not have a remote learning day if there were more than one snow day. We wouldn’t be stuck behind the screens looking out towards the snow. Many people have complained about remote learning days because they do not want to be stuck behind their computer screens in class.

“We cannot stand the torture of remote learning any longer!” is a common sentiment that has been heard among the students.

Meanwhile, their siblings are home from school with an actual snow day. Students have said that remote learning is a setback when it comes to their learning because it causes their attention span to run short.

Many teachers are lenient with remote snow days. They usually make us check in, give us our assignments, and tell us we can log out. Other teachers do not. They make us complete a lesson. Meanwhile, we look to the right side of our screen, counting the seconds until the class ends. These days remind us of our 2020 online school times when the desks were six feet apart when we finally returned to school.

“Every time I see the Zoom applications, the flashbacks start flooding back into my head.”

Still, the best part is when you could have the most tests in one day.

Then you get the email from Donald Austin: “Due to the impending snowstorm, all Newark Academy classes and after-school activities, including athletics, are canceled for tomorrow. Tomorrow will be a snow day. Stay warm and safe.” These are the 28 words every Newark Academy Student yearns to hear.

Snow days are the one opportunity most students can relax- they are a collective sigh of relief when you realize you get to stay home, drink hot chocolate, and remember the good old days when we were small children and school was about learning to color inside the lines. Most students think that the time they are home from school from 8:15 am to 2:30 is free because if there weren’t a snow day, they would be at school not doing any homework, so when the clock strikes 2:30, they can start working. Overall, Newark Academy should have snow days anytime there is a one percent chance of snow because who doesn’t love a good snow day?
