“Six-Seven”: The Cry of a Generation

By Alex Doyle ’29, Staff Writer

“Six-Seven!”: It’s the cry that’s tearing apart classrooms across the nation. Almost anyone vaguely involved with children has heard this in the past month, and it brings a few questions for many: Where does it come from? What does it mean?, and most importantly, Why do kids keep saying it?”

The concept of trend words is nothing new. Trends have been used for centuries to show the in-group. Each generation has its own words that for a time were all-the-rage, before quickly falling out of fashion. In 2025, trend words have taken on a new term: Brainrot. For those unfamiliar with the term, brainrot is a set of humorous terms used by young people to poke fun at themselves. From “chimpanzini bananini” to “skibidi toilet,” brainrot is a vast set of words and phrases that show who “knows what’s up.”

But how does 6-7 tie into this? Unlike many other brainrot terms, 6-7 has no clear origin. Some believe it’s derived from song lyrics, street numbers, or basketball players, but there is no definitive answer. Furthermore, the words (and their accompanying hand motions) have no set meanings. Is 6-7 good? Bad? Just plain random? For many, the answer isn’t clear. The humor is found in the randomness, and the juxtaposition between seriousness and comedy. For many, 6-7 is simply a chance to sit back and revel in the ridiculousness of our world.

Additionally, the joy of 6-7 also comes from the hunt for it. If in algebra, the answer is x=6.7, or if the temperature is 67 degrees, or even if the number 6 has to be said, you will near certainly be met with the cry of hundreds of adolescents yelling one thing: “Six-seven” with the tell-tale intonation, and tik-tok-esque hand motion. It’s truly an experience.

So, what does 6-7 mean for us? If anything, know that 6-7 isn’t bad. While some try to fight it, many agree the best path forward is to embrace it. Whether it’s 6-7 themed lessons, or adults being in on the joke, everyone has a place in 6-7. Yes, it’s random, but that might just be what makes it stick.
