The new wing was surprising to all students but it might just become the norm of the school. The new wing comes with some benefits and disadvantages however; students will soon have to get used of the wing’s style.
The daily grind of going to class day after day can wear on students and make school repetitive. However, classes in the new wing can give a needed relief to the usual day of school. Says 8th grade student Brian Peterson, “I feel that the new wing is good…the daily classes can be boring but it gives me a new perspective that freshens things up”. The classrooms in the new wing are also considerably nicer than in the rest of the school. My geometry classroom in room 10 gets incredibly hot during class and there is only a loud fan to cool down the room. It is also very cramped, but my French class in the new wing always seems to be the right temperature and since the classrooms in the new wing are larger, there is more room for students and teachers to spread out.
The new wing also helps clear out some of the traffic in the main hallway. Last year the hallway was very crowded, because many of the high school students had their classes and lockers there. Now, since these students have moved to the new wing, there is less traffic in the hallway. This relocation helps middle school students who frequent the main corridor. “It makes it easier to walk to and from my locker to get to class” says 8th grader Matt Lim.
The new wing can be a bit of a nuisance for students also. The new wing is very far away from middle school lockers so students can get very rushed in an attempt to get to class in the new wing. And since mostly high school students are in a new wing, it is hard to push past these students in order to get to class. This creates a traffic jam effect that can put rushed students under even more pressure. The same is true when leaving classes so having classes in the new wing can make students late for class. 8th grader Isabel Alland does not like having classes in the new wing because they are “Too far away”.
Whether students like it or not, the style of the new wing will soon be adopted everywhere. Middle School Principle Tom Ashburn said, “There is a master plan that will expand room space for middle school classrooms occurring in the next 2-4 years. At the same time, old areas of the school will be renovated also.”
Middle school students generally like the new wing however they complain that it is too far away. In the near future, all classrooms will be like the new wing so students can get all the perks of new wing classrooms without having to walk far distances to get there. It seems like a win-win.
