The Gun Debate

By Rakhi Kundra

You are hunting.  You take a shot at a deer, and you miss.  But the noise that your gun made was so loud that it scared all of the other animals away.  There are no other animals to hunt, so you go home.  You used one bullet hunting today.

Why does one need a gun other then to hunt? Yes, one should be able to defend themselves.  But if a circumstance becomes so horrible that you need to physically defend yourself, you can call the police.  You do not need to take matters into your own hands.

Many members of the NA middle school agree on this matter.  In fact, over 50 middle school students have signed a petition protesting for stricter gun laws, background checks, etc.  The petition basically says that guns in general need to be better regulated, and there needs to be stricter laws in the process of obtaining/using a gun.  When one wants to purchase a gun, they should definitely have to go through the process of having their background checked in case they have a strong record or any potential features that could be unsafe with a gun.

Also, guns that can shoot more then 30 bullets at a time shouldn’t be allowed.  These are military-style guns, and they are unnecessary for civilian life.  As mentioned before, only one bullet is needed for hunting.  Is there a necessity for large magazines?

Nowadays, in some states, people are able to carry guns around freely, and they can buy one whenever they want.  But these kinds of actions can lead to disasters.  Say a gun gets in the hands of someone who doesn’t know how to handle it, or worse, someone who is mentally disabled and doesn’t know what they’re doing.  Say a gun gets into the hands of a criminal.  Look at what happened in Newton Connecticut.  Because a gun got into the hand of the wrong person, many children lost their lives.  Because of this recent shooting, the issue of gun control as arisen once again.  We need to prevent things like this from happening again.

Guns are an issue, and although the President is trying to correct the issue, our voices need to be heard because they will make a difference against the fight against guns.
