1. Gravity– From Alfonso Cuaron, this sci-fi action movie is already being called revolutionary in its use of visual effects. Starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as two astronauts who get separated from their space ship and are completely alone, tethered to nothing but each other, this film is looking to make big waves come Oscar season. (October 4)
2. 12 Years a Slave– This brutal film is about Soloman Northrup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man who gets kidnapped, sold back into slavery, and forced to work for a malicious slave owner (Michael Fassbender). It has all of the possibilities of becoming one of the most violent yet groundbreaking films of the year. (October 18th)
3. All is Lost– In Robert Redford’s first acting role in 6 years, this film centers around a man’s tale of survival against the elements after his sailboat is destroyed at sea. Early word from the Cannes Film Festival has praised this film. (October 18th)
4. Dallas Buyers Club– In this film, Matthew McConaughey plays Ron Woodruff, a man who found himself in a life or death battle with pharmaceutical companies after being diagnosed with HIV. The film is already getting rave reviews. (November 1st)
5. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire– The second installment in this popular young adult franchise sees protagonists Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark (Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson) back in the arena for the 75th Hunger Games. (November 23rd)
6. American Hustle– David O. Russell (the director of The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook) is back with a film with a star studded cast and a similar tone to that of Best Picture Winner Argo. Starring Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Jeremy Renner, and Amy Adams, this film, about con men and the FBI in the 1970s, is expected to be a big contender in the Oscars. (December 13th)
7. Her– From revolutionary director Spike Jonze (who also directed Being John Malkovich), this film focuses on Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix), who falls in love with his advanced operating system. This film also stars Amy Adams, Scarlett Johansson, and Rooney Mara. We should expect an incredible screenplay from this cult favorite director. (December 18th)
8. Anchorman: The Legend Continues- Our favorite news crew is back 9 years after the first installment. Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) leads his news team by taking New York’s first 24 hours news channel by storm. Expect another hilarious outing from this cult comedy (December 20th).
9. August: Osage County– Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning play from Tracy Letts, this movie follows a crazy and dysfunctional family who reunites after the death of the patriarch of the family. Starring Meryl Strep, Julia Roberts, Ewan McGregor, and many more, this is a family drama you will not want to miss. (December 25th)
10. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty– Ben Stiller directs this movie based on the 1939 short story “The Secret Life of Walter Mity” by James Thurber. It is the story of a man named Mitty who escapes his unexciting daily life by delving into elaborate daydreams. Also starring Kristen Wiig, it will be interesting to see both of them outside of the comedy genre. (December 25th)
