Champion Book Review

By Katy Kim ’18, Staff Writer

I read the third and final book of Marie Lu’s popular Legend trilogy, Champion. I strongly recommend
that the two previous books Legend and Prodigy are read as a prerequisite for Champion. This
Dystopian YA book revisits former lovers June Iparis and Daniel Altan Wing “Day” as they combat yet
more war between the Colonies and the Republic, separated rival territories on a future North America.
June is still in the running for an elite political position in the Republic, Princeps Elect, while previous
“enemy of state” Day now is very highly ranked in the military. Princeps Elect is not only a political
position, June will also need to be the young Elector Anden’s partner for life. Day’s secret illness is
also getting worse day by day!  June and Day rarely see each other because of these factors.
When a final peace treaty between the Republic and the Colonies is anticipated, a deadly plague
epidemic strikes the Colonies and the Republic is blamed for biological warfare. June Iparis, the
Republic’s prodigy is the only one who knows the cure for this plague strain and she must finally reunite
with legend Day to save their Republic one ultimate time.
Will June and Day be together? Will even Day survive? Will June become Princeps Elect? Will
the Republic fend the Colonies off? ELECTOR ANDEN AND JUNE IPARIS?! These pressing
questions will be answered when you read Champion. I enjoyed Champion thoroughly, however the
ending is a tad farfetched… Marie Lu’s writing is sharp, inventive and fast paced; a must read for
Divergent lovers!
