  1. A massive pro-democracy movement is gaining strength in Hong Kong. Tens of thousands of protestors have taken to the streets.

  1. A Mexican “drug cartel kingpin” known simply as “H” was captured after an 11-month manhunt.

  1. A UVA student named Hannah Graham went missing on September 13 and has yet to be found. The prime suspect, Jesse Matthew sped away in his car after being questioned and was later arrested and jailed. He was charged with “abduction with intent to defile.”

  1. A massive wildfire nicknamed the King Fire has devastated 145 square miles east of Sacramento. The fire—which has cost upwards of $50 million to fight, is the most recent in a series of fires that California has endured this year. And the fires aren’t going away — the dry season of an extremely dry year is beginning.

  1. Almost 350 Syrian refugees who were crammed into a small fishing boat and likely set sail for Italy were caught in rough seas and rescued by a Cyprus cruise ship. Upon being rescued, however, they refused to disembark, insisting that they be sent to Italy. They were eventually forced inland and four of the organizers of the trek were arrested on counts of illegal trafficking.
