When I first started at Newark Academy, I was nervous, and I didn’t want to participate in anything. I didn’t want my voice to be heard. But after only a few weeks, Newark Academy has taught me that taking action is not as difficult as it seems. I learned this lesson even before I started Newark Academy, when I emailed science teacher Ms. Tavares about starting the GLOBE CLUB. My first email to her went like this:
Dear Mrs. T,
I am really excited for the upcoming school days!!
I would like to suggest something that my last teacher suggested. There is a website called http://www.globe.gov that is a really cool program. What we do in globe is we track the temperature, barometric pressure, cloud coverage, contrails, and precipitation. We didn’t do this, but you can also track the humidity as well. You can send the results in, and the whole world can look at the different climates and weather in different countries. You do have to train for globe, but in the end, it is a really good program to benefit from and I hope that you consider it!! See you on Tuesday!! I can’t wait for school to start once again. I miss being with all my friends, especially the new ones!!
See you soon,
Micaela A.
That was on August 28. She responded by saying that she indeed was a GLOBE certified member and asked me if I would like to start a club. I had a small meeting with her during the second part of my lunch period. That was on the first day of school. Then I asked who wanted to join, and got a list of people. I had the GLOBE club put in for approval and three days later it was on the bulletin board as an option for one of the clubs. Later, there was a separate stand for the club at the Middle School Club Fair. From this experience, I learned that it is not very hard to start a club. You do have to take a few steps to reach your goal, but if there were no work involved, you would not feel the satisfaction of creating something. Most of all, if you have an idea, you don’t have to hide. Make your voice heard!
