The Minuteman

The Official Newark Academy Newspaper

Featuring…The Mission Statement!

Our last Feature focused on Generosity of Spirit, a phrase familiar to most people at Newark Academy. Yet something that many students may not have considered since touring and applying is the Newark Academy mission statement, whose last three words are the source of the “generosity of spirit” phrase.  The mission statement reads: Newark Academy will contribute to the world engaged individuals instilled with a passion for learning, a standard of excellence, and a generosity of spirit. This feature explores both the overarching concept of a mission statement and the intricacies and implications of our own. Get an idea of what makes an effective or an ineffective mission statement by reading the top three best and worst from some of your favorite brands. If you prefer the nitty-gritty, the often overlooked third word “will” gets some attention in this feature. Even in the creation of The Minuteman, the mission statement shapes our standards and actions regardless of our awareness of it. But can we go as far as to compare it to the operating procedure of a factory? And is a mission statement truly the best set of words to understand our school? Finally, have some fun with our latest NewarkAcademyFeature BuzzFeed, which describes Newark Academy problems as unique as our mission statement itself.
