Welcome to a new year of The Minuteman. This is the first edition of “News Top 10,” in which ten current events are briefly summarized.

  1. An Oregon man killed 9 and injured 9, before killing himself at a community college. President Obama gave a frustrated speech, lamenting, “Somehow this has all become routine.”

  1. A US-led NATO airstrike hit a hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan, severely damaging it, killing 19, and seriously injuring 37. NATO has called it “collateral damage,” but that claim is being questioned by the UN.

  1. Speaker of the House John Boehner announced his resignation. The House elected Representative Paul Ryan, of Wisconsin, as his replacement.

  1. Over 150 world leaders met at the annual UN General Assembly. Obama and Putin argued openly about the Syrian civil war, in which they support opposite sides. Tensions were also high between Iran and Israel as the Iran deal was discussed.

  1. Russia has carried out airstrikes that are purportedly against ISIS targets, but the majority of them have in fact been against Syrian rebels, the US’s allies. China will join these airstrikes soon.

  1. During the annual Hajj in Mecca, a massive stampede occurred. The death toll released by Saudi officials is 769, but BBC Monitoring placed it 1,216. Iran has cited Saudi mismanagement as the cause and threatened harsh retaliation. This came just two weeks after a crane collapse that killed 118 pilgrims in Mecca.

  1. It was revealed that Pope Francis, while in the United States, controversially met with county clerk Kim Davis, who refused to issue marriage licenses to gay couples. The Vatican, however, said that it was not an act of support for Davis. He also met with his longtime friend who is in a gay partnership.

  1. Republicans in Congress attempted to defund Planned Parenthood and threatened to shut down the government. The Senate then prevented a shutdown by passing a budget that would fund the government until December 11.

  1. Volkswagen has come under massive fire after it was revealed that it cheated on emissions test for diesel cars. This allowed up to 11 million of their cars to emit nitrogen oxide up to 40 times the legal amount. All of these cars in the US are being recalled, the CEO resigned, a criminal investigation is underway, and Volkswagen has suffered a nightmare PR blow.

  1. The best evidence yet for water for Mars was discovered. While it is not drinkable as is, it could be purified to be used as drinking water for potential astronauts.
