Welcome back! Whether you’re a new student first roaming the halls or a returning one reuniting with your friends and teachers, we could all use a little refresher to help get back into the flow of things. So without further ado, here’s a comprehensive beginner’s guide to Newark Academy.
Daily Routine
SCHOOL STARTS at 8:10 – if you’re an Upper Schooler, make sure you’re in the auditorium on every day except Tuesday, when you’re with your advisor group. If you’re a Middle Schooler, you’re in the auditorium on Wednesday, choral room on Monday and Friday, and with your advisor group Tuesday and Thursday. DON’T BE LATE! If you are, make sure you sign in at the Middle School or Upper School Office. Too many times and you might find yourself with a detention…
LUNCH GOES FROM 11:30-1:30 – Remember, Upper Schoolers, you can’t enter the dining hall until 11:45, or else you might find yourself getting kicked out by an angry Dr. D. BUT! If your schedule that allows you to only eat lunch from 11:30-12:00, you are allowed to get a lunch pass from the Upper School office to skip that 15-minute period. Middle Schoolers, you can eat at any time. Enjoy your first 15 minutes of freedom.
SCHOOL ENDS at 2:30 – if you are a Middle Schooler, you will actually be let out at 2:10 to go to sports, which run from 2:30-3:15. If you’re an Upper Schooler in sports season, you typically have 45 minutes before your sports practice starts. You can use this time to do homework, meet with a teacher, go to a club meeting, work out in the weight room, or just chill with your friends.
SPORTS START at 3:15 – plan your time wisely! Make sure you leave time to pack your bags, get changed, etc. Most athletes prefer to change in the varsity locker rooms downstairs in the Field House, but if you prefer a little more privacy you can also use the locker rooms near the Upper Gym or a bathroom. If you have a game/match that day, your coach will tell you what time you have to report – make sure you show up on time!
BUSES- the first buses leave at 3:30. If you’re in sports season or missed the first bus, you can always catch the second round of buses at 6.
General Tips
- JOIN A CLUB OR SPORT – Get involved! Newark Academy hosts a wide array of clubs and sports, ranging from Animal Welfare Club to Young Republicans Club and cross country to tennis
- MEET WITH YOUR TEACHERS – Newark Academy has some of the best teachers around. Get the most out of them! Go talk to them if you need help with homework, want to prepare for a test, or just want to discuss about something interesting
- GET WORK DONE – school might seem like a piece of cake now, but don’t be fooled. Soon the papers and lab reports will be piling up and you’ll find yourself short on time. Utilize your free periods and after school time wisely.
- USE YOUR RESOURCES – there are many places to get work done at Newark Academy – the ILC, the library, the dining hall, or literally any open space. Make sure you check your email and Canvas often for any updates.
- GET YOUR COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS IN- Every Upper Schooler is required to complete a minimum of 10 community service hours each year, six of which have to be direct hours (helping directly the people who are benefiting). If you want to find opportunities for community service, check out the community service bulletin board or stop by the community service fair.
Technology
- MICROSOFT OFFICE- You can download a copy of Microsoft Office 2016 for free from the Newark Academy resources page. However, you can only do it at school connected to the school Wi-Fi.
- YOUR SCHEDULE- Did you know you can get your day to day schedule on your calendar, such as iCal or Google Calendar? Go to http://faculty.newarka.edu/~naschedules/ and find your name to get your schedule on your electronic calendar.
- HAWKES LIBRARY- the Library has a variety of online resources available to help with your research paper, essay, or your homework. Check out the Hawkes Library tab on the Newark Academy My School App page to utilize them and ask Ms. Moroz if you have any questions.
