The Newark Academy girls’ tennis program has a history almost as storied as the school itself. Its dominance has been especially evident in recent years, as the team has won over 75% of its matches en route to winning a bevy of prep, conference, and state championships. While many star players have come and gone, one aspect has remained constant throughout the recent NA dynasty: William Crook. Better known as Arky to the Newark Academy community, Mr. Crook has remained a steady presence alongside the courts, coaching both the boys’ and girls’ teams for about three decades. Unfortunately, health concerns have, at least for the moment, left Arky unable to coach.

Arky’s coaching has been a major factor in the success of the girls’ tennis team. “Arky has harnessed a universal desire for success that has heightened our motivation and determination as a team,” said Rakhi Kundra ’17, tennis team captain, “which without a doubt has very much contributed to our success.” However, don’t expect the team to suffer too greatly in Arky’s absence. Firstly, the squad boasts superior player experience. The team, currently ranked third in the state, includes Cynthia Huang ’18 and Crystal Wang ’17, who finished last year with records of 19-4 and 16-5 and first and second singles titles respectively. The team returns almost all of last year’s starting rotation, and introduces a number of extremely talented new freshmen to the program as well.

Furthermore, the team is surely being left in good hands. “Arky not coaching the team this year has left an impact on the team, but we are very fortunate that Dr. D stepped up,” Rakhi went on to say. Dr. DiBianca, the man filling Arky’s (tennis) shoes, has had plenty of experience on the Newark Academy tennis courts. Dr. D has also served as the Middle School Boys “A” Team head coach, helping to develop many players who have gone on to achieve great victories at the varsity level.
Although Arky is not currently at the helm, his enduring lessons and wisdom survive in the players who have played for him. He has left an indelible mark on the community that loves him so, both in the classroom and on the courts. The entire Newark Academy community wishes Arky a speedy recovery, and hopes to find him back on the tennis courts very soon. Until then, you can be sure that Newark Academy Women’s Tennis is in good hands. We will be expecting another strong season this fall, as the team remains ranked #3 in the state by NJ.com with a record of 8-0 and counting to start the season.
