An Inside Scoop with Erin Eagle, Fashion Icon and Founder of InTheseJeans

By Lydia Yeshitla, Section Editor

As we approach the middle of the school year, it’s easy to feel a bit worn out during the mornings, especially after likely sleeping for only a few hours; times like these call for a little fashion inspiration to make for a smoother morning routine. There’s no better way to receive style tips than by speaking to fellow classmate and fashion icon, Erin Eagle ‘17. Founder of the style blog InTheseJeans, Erin has transformed her unique fashion sense into a hobby — she’s often found posing for photographs or entertaining fashion enthusiasts online. I was fortunate enough to ask the style blogger a few questions about InThese Jeans.

Lydia Yeshitla: What inspired you to create a fashion blog and did you think of its title yourself?

Erin Eagle: People have always come to me for style advice. While I had always searched the internet for my own fashion inspiration, last year, I realized that I could actually be an inspiration to others. At first, my instagram and blog gave me the opportunity to share my daily style with my friends, but as I started focusing more on the artistic vision of each individual picture rather than just the outfit I was wearing, my account picked up momentum and I have been able to collaborate with various brands and other bloggers. As for the name of my blog, yes, I actually did title it myself! When I was thinking of potential titles, many were already taken. So I tried to think of some fashion staples that everyone needs in her closet and of course, I kept coming back to jeans. I strongly believe in the statement that you can never own enough denim… and so the name was born!

LY: Have you participated in any activities that helped you develop ideas for your blog?

EE: Last summer, I participated in a program with Seventeen Magazine in New York City, and I had the opportunity to speak with many of the amazing editors there. One of the best pieces of advice that I took from the digital team at Seventeen was to pick a focus, and do it well, rather than trying to focus on many different platforms. My focus is on Instagram, so I am constantly working on improving my account. My time at Seventeen Magazine was an experience of a lifetime!

LY: Do you think fashion can serve as a way to advocate for important causes? Have you ever used fashion to convey a message?

EE: Right now, a big trend is faux fur. I think it’s especially trendy because more and more people are moving away from wearing animal products. I really appreciate that many designers are using materials to create a similar look. I definitely support using faux fur as opposed to real animal fur, and I hope to promote this cause and follow that trend through my photos.

LY: Have you considered designing your own clothes?

EE: Earlier in high school, I took some classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology for fashion design. I loved those classes, but as I got older and experimented with fashion in other ways, I realized that I could spend hours on my computer scrolling through social media (I am definitely addicted). For that reason, I am focusing on the social media aspect of fashion for now, but I do hope to get back into sewing, as it is a fun and useful skill!

LY: Who is “outside of those jeans” and on the other side of the camera? In other words, who takes your photos?

EE: I actually work with a tripod most of the time, but when I can’t get the right angle, I usually ask my mom or a friend to help out.

LY: Where do you find the time to keep your blog relevant?

EE: In any free time I have, you could probably find me on my phone working on my blog.  It’s not just about editing pictures and posting them, I have to find relevant hashtags, engage with others’ fashion blogs, and constantly look for new inspiration. It takes more effort that one would think, but because I love to do it, it doesn’t feel like too much work.

LY: How would a price-conscious shopper keep up with fashion trends as prices keep rising and continue to be a burden?

EE: There are so many stores that copy high-end designers! Forever 21 and H&M, for example, have super trendy apparel at a much more affordable price. If you keep an eye out, you will certainly find great sales, especially at the end of seasons at department stores. There are also reward programs that I always join if convenient (and if it’s free of course) at many stores, such as Pacsun, American Eagle, Hollister, Urban Outfitters, which really do make the difference.

LY: What tips would you give to an aspiring fashion blogger?

EE: First and foremost, the aspiring blogger should know that running a fashion blog seems overwhelming at first, but once you start blogging, it feels so simple! Secondly, be consistent: try to post everyday so your followers remain interested and even look forward to your daily posts. Always remember to stay true to your style. Lastly, do not get caught up in the number of followers and likes on your posts; put out content unique to yourself, and the rest will follow!

Thank you in advance, Erin, for making our morning routine much simpler! To hopeful fashion icons and style bloggers in the making, I am sure Erin answered a few of your questions. If you are not considering creating your own fashion blog, then hopefully Erin gave you some wardrobe inspiration. Erin’s distinct style and presence on social media never fail to impress, so be sure to follow Erin’s fashion Instagram account, @inthesejeans, and check out her style blog at inthesejeans.com!
