Food Truck Day is an event that students are always looking forward to, where they are able to destress from their busy days and bond over a shared love of food. Students are always enthusiastic as they know the menu will be extraordinary and captivating. The first annual fall food truck day of this year was on November 16th. There were five trucks in attendance: Good Food Good Mood, Taxi Cab Burger, Waffles & Dreams, Carnivale Donut Bar, and Angry Archie’s.
This year, the dessert trucks were especially popular. Waffles & Dreams had a delicious Nutella Crepe and Carnivale Donut Bar had its sensational Donut and Milkshake combo. Emily Lim ‘27 talked about how she loved this combo: “I got an amazing donut milkshake; it was two desserts that I loved in one. I never found anything like it until Food Truck Day this year.”
While the event is an iconic NA tradition, School Council implemented some changes this year, including putting picnic blankets outside for students to sit and enjoy. The Food Trucks chosen this year were all new to NA as the student council decided to support other businesses and bring new menu and flavors for the student community to enjoy.
Good Food Good Mood in particular, with its unique gourmet-style menu, was a big hit among students. Students swarmed the food truck to order their popular truffle fries. Although Taxi Cab Burger didn’t get quite as many visitors, the music they played contributed to the overall relaxed atmosphere. Some students even started to sing along to the music while they waited in the lines. Angry Archie’s received some positive feedback, with one student describing the lobster rolls as “indubitably delectable.”
Overall NA students had a positive attitude towards Food Truck day. A student says,“I enjoyed the food truck day; I think it was a nice experience. It was nice to have something different from the regular lunch options.” Many new students also got to see one of the NA traditions through this event.
While the Food Truck menus had some variety, some students raised concerns about the lack of vegetarian options. Sanjukta Srinivasan ’27 commented on how her options felt limited: “As a vegetarian, it felt as though the only options were to get a burger or the dessert foods. I think if the trucks in the future have more options for those who are vegan/vegetarian food truck day could be a bigger success.” Sanjukta also added, “We could’ve had one burger truck and then a different truck that would have appealed to more people.” Sanjukta’s opinion was shared by other vegetarian students as well.
Many people have enjoyed the first fall food truck day. “In the future, I look forward to the new and returning food trucks. There’s still a bunch of food trucks this year and last that I wasn’t able to try so I hope some of them come back,” said Emily Lim. Events like these bring out the unique experiences that Newark Academy has to offer. It’s important to bring different events like these to the NA community as it relieves stress from academic life and also provides opportunities for students to bond over food. In the past years, Food Trucks came to NA in the spring and from now on hopefully, it will also become a yearly fall tradition as well.
